BACKGROUND

21

Chaithanya awakens at the crack of dawn as usual. She quickly slides on her slippers and runs to help her mother put a pail of water on some firewood. She helps prepare their favourite breakfast of rice porridge as her brother slowly wakes up and stumbles to join them for breakfast. While walking to school, Chaithanya and her brother chatter about how the tea plants will begin flowering soon. Chaithanya has to walk farther away to go to school than her brother. He goes to a school that teaches him English because he might use it one day. He always comes home with exciting stories about what he learned that day. He can understand some of the lines on the English radio channel. Their mother and father are so proud of how well he is learning. Chaithanya sometimes wonders whether she will learn about these enthralling things or see a bigger world.

JJGA-Campus

JJGA is one of the only English medium schools in Dejoo village, North Lakhimpur. Most parents here are tea plantation workers with large families to feed, but they have small daily wages to make ends meet. Because of a lack of funds, a few hundred rupees can cover the cost for some children to have the opportunity to study while their siblings don’t. Of those who can afford it, girl children, specifically, are chosen to be sent to local Assamese schools instead of an English medium as it is seen as too heavily a price to pay for the future of a girl child.

Story of Chaithanya echoes the voices of many, many children in Assam. They dream of a future far too costly for their imagination, but for us, it would hardly cost as much as a Starbucks coffee. That is as little as it takes to make their dreams a reality.

A happy note from us!

Thank you for the contributions you have made so far. We have received sufficient contributions for giving support to the students this year. The support that you wish to make from now on(except the monthly support you already committed to), will be used to continue the support to the students in the next academic year(2024-’25), and also identify new students who can avail of the benefit in the coming year.

The fund for the next year is equally important, as we have to give the parents assurance about support from our side for a certain number of years, especially when we take in new students who would not be going to school otherwise.
